Researchers identify molecular mechanism that transports important dietary fats to the fetus

Transcriptional analysis of LC-PUFA-phospholipid biosynthetic pathways in the pregnant liver. Credit: Nature Communications (2024). DOI: 10.1038/s41467-024-51089-z Research in mouse models has identified a new mechanism for how long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFAs), like omega-3s, are transported from the mother to the fetus during pregnancy. The results, published in Nature Communications, could help to identify ways to tackle LC-PUFA deficiency in the developing fetus. LC-PUFAs are a group of fatty acids that are essential to the functioning of the body. They are used in cell walls, provide an essential layer of insulation (known as myelin) around nerve cells, and are involved Read More
